The Indonesian shoemaker Winson and the Japanese men’s shoe store Tanakajakkuten has collaborated on small fully handmade RTW range that combines dress and rugged in a really lovely way. Unique designs, superb craftsmanship, and really wearable and interesting shoes is the result.
The European Union and Indonesia have signed a free trade agreement that will remove 98% of all duties in both directions immediately after it’s been implemented, which is expected to be next year. In the quality shoe world there’s a big potential for more of the fine handmade boots and shoes that are made in Indonesia will be sold by European retailers.

One of the most praised Indonesian bootmakers – Midas Bootmaker – has collaborated with the Swedish store Skolyx on the first RTW collection ever for the brand. Hand lasted, hand welted, handmade sole stitch (even for rubber soles), hand built heels, with real leather toe and heel stiffeners – serious craftsmanship now easily accessible widely.
There’s many countries in the world who has a quite large production of quality welted footwear, yet still fly under the radar for most. One of these is Indonesia. In this article I go through a number of the interesting makers, of which a majority use hand welted construction, still with prices starting at below €200.
