Recently I received a new pair from the Chinese maker Acme Shoemaker, a pair of MTM / semi bespoke casual split toe derby made in a truly amazing camel leather. It has a lovely natural grain character and on top of that it’s very hard wearing, making it work perfect for a chunkier more heavy shoe that will likely be worn a bit harder.
It always take a while before I’m finished with the huge article coverage of all the 25 contest shoes of the shoemaking world champs displayed at the super trunk this past Saturday in London, so here’s a quick picture special showcasing the top three. Usually exotics aren’t really my thing, but this exquisite vintage lizard leather in a subtle dark brown really spoke to me. The pair is made by the Italian shoemaker Calzoleria Carlino, who currently runs a campaign with no upcharge on orders of lizard leather for their MTO, MTM or bespoke.
This Saturday in Tokyo at one of the world’s largest deparment store’s – Isetan Shinjuku – the top three shoes from the this year’s World Championships of Shoemaking were on display, me, third placed Louis Lampertsdörfer and second placed Victor Vulpe were there to talk to visitors about the shoes and the contest, and the latter held a shoemaking masterclass. Here’s a brief summary of the event including a bunch of photos.
I’m currently in Japan, and one of the highlights this far was picking up my fourth pair from the bespoke shoemaker Eiji Murata, alias Main d’Or. An exquisite pair of split toe derbies in a medium brown embossed grain leather, made to the same extremely high standard as he’s known for.

Here’s a thorough look at a new pair I received from the Chinese maker Acme Shoemaker, a pair of MTM / semi bespoke split toe derbys with hand braided contrasting stitching. The special thing with Acme is that all their shoes are made to the same standard, from the main RTW range to the full bespoke offerings.
For those who don’t know, every year there’s a big “boot and shoe aging” contest called the Stitchdown Patina Thunderdome, where hundres of footwear lovers wear a pair and cover the aging progression during six months. This year I had a pair of Midas Bootmaker x Skolyx x Dr. Sole moc toe boots in natural semi veg tanned leather, here’s a picture special of how these developed during the past half year.
This week the top three shoes in the World Championships of Shoemaking 2022 are on display at the department store Isetan Men’s in Tokyo, and to kick it off there was a talk session with media and selected customers with myself and the three shoemakers who presented both their contest shoes and showcased some of their other work.
