The well-renowned French bespoke shoemaker Atelier du Tranchet – run by Christophe Corthay and Christophe Algans – closed its doors permanently yesterday. After a tough couple of years the highly creative footwear maker decided to shut down the business, which was met with sadness from many in the business.
Few bespoke shoemakers push the artistic boundaries in the same way as Atelier du Tranchet / Tranchet Vif. The French makers have a style that leaves no one indifferent, here they have interpreted the Japanese cherry blossoming season in a sample shoe that is extravagant as it is well-made.
For the first, and perhaps the last time, I’m hereby presenting the highly prestigious Shoegazing Bespoke Awards, where me, myself and I have decided which bespoke shoemakers I think deserves to be awarded in four different categories: Creativity, Finishing, Patterns and Highest Minimum Level.
Few makers spend so much time on the bottoms as French bespoke shoemaker Atelier Du Tranchet. Above is one of many examples, a tribute to Japan with a decorative drawing and not least an amazingly made heel.

We often talk about the fact that we see a sort of a renaissance for classic shoes nowadays, and yet another example of this is how we more and more see shoes produced in ways tha is closer to art than products supposed to be worn. It’s also what Christophe Corthays new interesting project Tranchet Vif is about.
