Main d’Or / Eiji Murata is one of the most highly regarded bespoke shoemakers in the world, which he not least proved when he placed third in the World Championships in Shoemaking this spring. I’m in Tokyo this week for the big shoe event at Isetan, and in conjunction with this, picked up a new pair from Eiji Murata, which is on display here.

Time for a new review of my shoe collection as it looks right now. Quite a lot has happened over the last two years since I last had time to do this type of post, although the amount is the same: 23 pairs in total.
Eiji Murata, the man behind the brand Main d’Or, is one of the highest rated bespoke shoe makers in the world among people in industry, but still relatively unknown to most shoe interested people. Here’s a substantial buyer’s guide with an order of a pair of semi brogues as a base, where most of what you need to know about Main d’Or is included, among other things lots of pictures from the making.
A tight sole stitch is not something that necessarily makes the shoe better from a purely qualitative point of view, but a very sparse ones looks quite dull, and a very tight hand-sewn one such as the one in the picture is impressive craftsmanship.
